Gold is the most valuable resource in Nigeria, apart from oil and gas. Nigeria is endowed with large deposit of both alluvial and primary deposits with proven reserves spread across several parts of the schist belt in the North-West and South-West of Nigeria and a number of smaller occurrences at recently found locations in North Central and Eastern boundary with the Cameroun.

The World Bank in 2010 announced that annual gold exportation from Nigeria, from only Zamfara State is worth more than USD500m. In the same year, 2010, Segilola exploration generated 620,000 ounces of gold from their Illesa field.
